The Treehouse rests 25 feet up in a giant monkeypod tree overlooking Waipio Valley, site of one of the first settlements in the Hawaiian Islands. The six foot thick trunks reach a height of 20 to 25 feet before splitting into five or six heavy branches, many of which extend almost straight out horizontally for 50 feet or more.

The house was built in 1971 for Linda Beech by two boat builders, Eric Johnson and Steve Oldfather. They used teak and mahogany, giving the house the cozy feel of an old cabin cruiser. The rough beams underneath are not attached to the tree but slide beneath pairs of stainless steel pins driven into the the limbs. | ![]() |

The 10 by 20 foot house has a living and sleeping area, a dining area, and a small kitchen, all with built in shelves and cabinets. The wall-to-wall windows look out on the valley and a two thousand foot waterfall, named Papala. If conditions are right, you can hear the faint thunder of the crashing surf in the distance. Always present is the sound of waterfalls! |
